“Omo Atom”, The New Dictum Of The Average Ghanaian Market Woman – Inflation and Price Hikes

Prices of items especially food, fish and meat in the Accra markets are rising consistently and uncontrollably. Ama Konadu, a cold store operator on the Fulani Road on the Kasoa stretch lamented ‘dabiara mek) ak) fa nam biara no m3k) no na imo atum’- there is an increase in price of meat anytime I want to make a new purchase. The sudden price hike cuts across all commodities even water.

For instance, the Everpure brand of sachet water, which used to be 6 Ghanacedis(old price) now sells at 12 Ghana cedis in shops in Kasoa and 10 Ghana cedis in shops in Tema where the production site is located. The questions on the mind of the ordinary Ghanaian is, to what end is this hike?. What is the future of the average Ghanaian man who has a family of five and earns an average salary of 1000 Ghana cedis tax inclusive?

This harsh economic downturn has forced several companies to fold abruptly, also leading to the massive loss of jobs by many bread winners mostly graduates in the country. What is the cause of these constant hikes and what direction is it towards? For the betterment of the lives of the average Ghanaian or for the worse?

Earlier this year 2024, the PURC hinted that the price hike was going to take effect for a short period, from July to September. However, it is November and the norm has not ceased especially now that the elections and the Christmas and New year festivities are in sight.
This ongoing economic situation has considerably affected individuals, families, companies and even small-scale businesses causing them to go bankrupt in most cases. The concern is to what end is this hike?

Electricity, school fees and transportation cost is another story yet to be told. The cost of renting a decent place countrywide is also on the rise. Though, the ordinary Ghanain is not seeking a luxurious life but a comfortable one per one’s wage, these constant hikes makes it almost impossible.

Price increment and inflation is a major issue in the next month’s presidential election. Vice president Mahamudu Bawumia , the NPP’s flagbearer ,is locked in a tight race with John Mahama the NDC’s candidate. The fair outcry of Ghanaians gives a clue about the outcome of the elections.
