Ghana Health Service Conducts A Cholera Outbreak Vaccination program in the Western Region.

The Ghana Health Service has alerted the public of a launched 5-day mass vaccination exercise in the Western Region, targeting 600,000 residents across four Metropolitan, Municipal , and District Assemblies (MMDAs) affected by the cholera outbreak. This exercise, which started on December 15 and will end on December 19, 2024, aims to curb the spread of cholera.

The vaccination team will employ a house-to-house strategy, supplemented by positioning at strategic centers across sub-districts identified as epicenters. However, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers are exempt from this vaccination exercise.

This response is part of the Ghana Health Service’s efforts to protect residents from vaccine-preventable diseases, in line with their mandate to reduce morbidity and mortality .
In response to the cholera outbreak, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) is implementing proactive measures to control the spread and minimize fatalities. Sadly, the outbreak has already resulted in 10 deaths and 908 confirmed cases.

To help prevent further transmission, everyone is encouraged to follow these precautions:

  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and clean running water
  • Eat hot, freshly prepared food
  • Use sanitary facilities for defecation
