ECOWAS has officially accepted the membership withdrawal of Burkina , Mali and Niger. The withdrawal of the three countries was first announced a year ago. The statement also encouraged member nations to continue to give the ‘three exited nations’ membership privileges which encompasses free movement within the region with an ECOWAS passport.
For the First time in ECOWAS’ 50 year history, its members have withdrawn in this manner. Analysts describe it as an unprecedented setback that could jeopardize efforts to restore democracy and stabilize the increasingly fragile region.
