In a groundbreaking move to modernize Ghana’s transportation sector while staying true to local roots, GoRide, a new ride-hailing app designed specifically for the Ghanaian market, has been officially launched in Accra. This locally-developed platform promises to transform how passengers connect with taxi drivers, offering lower commission rates and prioritizing the needs of Ghana’s local drivers. The Vice-President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, unveiled the app during a launch event held at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) conference hall.

The Truth About GoRide

GoRide is a direct response to the high commission rates imposed by international ride-hailing services, which have long strained the earnings of local drivers. With its 10% commission rate—half the industry average of 20%—GoRide empowers Ghanaian drivers by allowing them to retain more of their earnings, creating a sustainable income and ensuring better support for their families. This initiative was born from a strategic public-private partnership and represents Ghana’s commitment to technological advancement and inclusive economic development.

Addressing High Commissions

Vice-President Dr. Bawumia emphasized that the app represents more than just a convenient ride-hailing service. It’s a platform of empowerment for Ghana’s local taxi drivers, especially those affiliated with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), who approached the government seeking relief from the challenges imposed by high commission rates and increased competition from international ride-hailing companies.

The launch of GoRide is seen as a significant milestone for Ghanaian transportation, not only addressing the financial burdens on drivers but also preserving the unique local touch of Ghana’s traditional taxis, which for decades have served as the backbone of urban transport.

GoRide is a powerful tool for Ghanaian drivers, allowing them to increase financial stability and maintain their livelihoods,” said Dr. Bawumia. “It’s not just an app; it’s a commitment to upgrade the trade of our local drivers while maintaining the essence of our local transport system.”

A New Era for Ghanaian Transportation

Before the rise of international platforms like Uber and Bolt, Ghana’s taxi system served commuters efficiently, with distinctive yellow-marked taxis providing accessible, trusted rides. The introduction of international apps brought both convenience and higher fees, but with them also came increased fares and commission concerns for local drivers. The launch of GoRide aims to level the playing field, allowing Ghana’s taxi drivers to leverage the convenience of a digital platform with lower operational costs.

Developed to support both passengers and drivers, GoRide offers a locally-focused, user-friendly alternative with digital payment integration via Tap ’n Go, a secure local payment platform. The service is currently available in select parts of urban Accra, targeting high-traffic areas, with plans to expand nationwide in the coming months.

Fostering Economic Growth

Dr. Bawumia highlighted the economic significance of GoRide, emphasizing the app’s potential for local wealth creation and foreign exchange conservation. By keeping profits within Ghana, GoRide aims to strengthen the local economy. With the use of the Ghana Card, the Digital Address System, Mobile Money Interoperability, and Ghana.Gov as key enabling technologies, GoRide stands as a testament to Ghana’s digital transformation strategy.

Job Creation and Industry Impact

The economic ripple effect of GoRide extends beyond the drivers themselves. The initiative will create jobs across various sectors, including vehicle maintenance, financial services, and customer support, driving further economic stability within the country.

Alhassan Tampuli, a Deputy Minister of Transport, expressed his appreciation for the project and assured drivers that there would be no fare increases in the next six months. He urged them to continue offering services at affordable rates, as GoRide expands its reach across the country, making quality, affordable transport accessible to all Ghanaians.
