In raising children there are chapters by chapters.Potty training is one of the main chapters in every individual’s growth and or upbringing.Potty training is a big step for both parents and their child. While each child is unique ,below is a step-by-step guide to help parents navigate the process:
1. The Ideal Time to Start
There is no best time to start but most children are ready between 9 months and 3 years. Usually you can introduce your child as soon as the child sits down. Some of the signs you could look out for as a parent or guardian is if your child
- can stay dry for at least 2 hours at a time
- Shows interest in the toilet or wearing underwear
- Communicates when they’ve pooped or peed
- Has the ability to follow simple instructions
- shows discomfort with dirty diapers
2. Get the Right Equipment- Some of the right tools or equipment for potty training may include
- A child-sized potty or a seat adapter for the regular toilet
- A stool if using the big toilet, so they can climb up and rest their feet
- Easy-to-remove clothing
3. Introduce the Potty
- Let your child explore the potty and explain what it’s for.
- You can show them how it’s used by letting them watch you or an older sibling.
- Practice sitting on it fully clothed first, then with a diaper, and eventually bare.
4. Create a Routine
- Encourage your child to sit on the potty at regular times: after meals, before bed, or after waking up.
- Praise them for trying, even if they don’t go.
5. Use Positive Reinforcement
- Offer lots of praise, hugs, or small rewards for progress.
- Expect accidents and never punish for it- they are part of the learning process.
- Use fun books or songs to keep them relaxed while sitting.
6. Teach Hygiene
- Teach your child how to wipe properly (front to back for girls).
- Encourage handwashing every time after using the potty.
7. Ditch Diapers Gradually
- Transition to training pants or underwear during the day.
- Continue using diapers at night until they consistently wake up dry.
8. Be Patient and Consistent- Training a child in any way is not easy. You need extra patience in potty training. Remember that every child is special and unique. Some may grasp the concept faster than others.
