When explosives fall into the wrong hands, the consequences can be devastating. The recent incident in the Konongo Odumase enclave which happened around 7:30 pm on Wednesday is a tragic example, where the unregulated sale of dynamites and mining explosives has led to a catastrophic explosion, leaving many displaced and buildings in ruins .
The fact that individuals are selling these explosives in shops, alongside household items, is alarming. It highlights the urgent need for stricter regulations and enforcement to prevent such incidents.
The impact of this incident is not limited to the immediate community. It also raises concerns about the broader issue of illegal mining (Galamsey) in Ghana, which has been a persistent problem. Addressing this related issue, Civil Society through Mr Daryl Bosu calls for repeal of LL2462, a law related to mining in forest reserves, which underscores the need for more effective legislation and enforcement to address this issue.

Ultimately, the consequences of explosives falling into the wrong hands can be dire, and it is crucial that we take proactive measures to prevent such incidents and ensure public safety.
The death toll from the explosion at Odumase, near Konongo in the Ashanti Region, has risen to three. Two additional victims succumbed to injuries after the incident on Wednesday night. Several others, including firefighters, were injured. Authorities confirm most have been treated and discharged, but five victims remain hospitalized, with two in critical condition being considered for referral to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

The Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene shared that government has donated ₵5,000 to each of the 30 households affected by the Konongo-Odumase mining shop explosion and assured victims of further support and directed NADMO to assess the damage and provide relief, including mattresses and roofing material.
