Mahamoud Ali Youssouf , Wins African Union Election: A New Era for Pan-Africanism.

Mahamoud Ali Youssouf a Djiboutian Diplomat has been elected as the new Chairman of the African Union Commission (AUC), succeeding Moussa Faki Mahamat. Youssouf secured 33 votes in the seventh round, defeating Kenya’s Raila Odinga.

The election process involved 49 eligible African countries, with three candidates vying for the position. To win, a candidate needed to garner a two-thirds majority of the votes cast. The seat is rotated among the five regions, with the Eastern region presenting a candidate this time around, while the Northern region presented a deputy chairperson candidate.

Youssouf’s election marks a significant shift in the leadership of the AU Commission, with a focus on addressing critical continental challenges such as economic integration, security, and diplomatic coordination. The goal is to continue working towards a united, prosperous, and influential Africa on the global stage.

In addition to Youssouf’s election, H.E. Selma Malika of Algeria was elected as the incoming AUC Deputy Chairperson, reflecting the trust and confidence in her leadership and dedication to serving the people.
