Algban Bagbin, the speaker of parliament has explained that parliamentary candidates whose results were cancelled by the Supreme Court on Friday, December 27,2024 , are not eligible to be sworn in as Members of Parliament on January 6th 2025.
This decision follows a legal battle by the NDC against a High Court ruling on December 20th 2024.The High Court gave a directive to the Electoral Commission to recoalate parliamentary election results for nine disputed constituencies.

The NDC rebelled against the High Court’s directive asserting that the recoalition exercise was unlawful and illegal. The NDC claimed the exercise had no official legal basis. They alleged that the exercise was compromised hence the credibility and the transparency of the process was questionable.
The Supreme Court quashed the results of Ablekuma North, Okaikwei Central, , Tema Central and Techiman South Constituencies. They stated interferences in the recoalition process.
Bagbin has stated that He had already taken the position before the Court passed the verdict.
‘To become a member of parliament you have to be elected by the voter and you have to be declared by the electoral commission’.
He emphasized that for one to be declared an MP , He or She had to be sworn in by the speaker of parliament . If this process is not done you remain an MP-elect.
The Supreme court ruling brings uncertainty to outstanding constituencies as stakeholders await further directives on the way forward.
