The Power of Words

Akua Marfo had the chance to travel to Moscow to further her education. During her stay there, an opportunity arose for her to work as a Pedagog with one big institution. During her interview she was given the opportunity to ask a question.She asked;
“How do we discipline the children?”
After her question hell broke loose. The recruiter could not fathom why she used the word “ discipline “. To them that was a harsh word . Akua comes from Ghana and throughout her education from primary to university, the word discipline was a good word . It was a word that represented boundaries and good behavior to her.
Later, after Akua’s education she would go on to have another interview for the position of a Communication Officer. During this interview Akua was asked the popular question ; “Tell us about yourself “. Akua started on and on and on while the interview panel kept quiet and watched her.

Unsure whether they were listening to her or even paying any attention to what she was saying .She ended by saying to the panel
Are we clear?. It was then that the members of the panel started talking and blasting her. They asked what she meant by “Are we clear”? Baffled Akua walked outside wondering what was wrong with what she said.
Words said or articulated express the thoughts in our minds. Words embody what our minds perceive
The words we use expresses what is represented in our minds. Words define our reality. People don’t stop to think what they are saying sometimes the effect it can have on a person.

Words are used as a thread to weave language, based on the understanding of the individual. language is an integral part of the life of a group of people. This may include spoken and unspoken words. Words and culture go hand in hand. Culture greatly influences how people receive words from others. Culture influences how people create sense and meaning out of the words we speak to them.

During communication one has to ensure that he is communicating exactly what he intends to communicate. While using words, one has to consider the cultural background of the target audience. From the construction , through the the transmission to the reception. One also has to pay attention to unspoken words. This includes gestures, eye contacts, gazes, looks and even the tone of the words spoken.
