Voters Reject Alleged Food Distribution Truck Linked to Ursula Owusu at Ablekuma West Polling Station

Ablekuma West food truck chaos Ghana elections 2024

Tensions flared at the Assemblies of God Church polling station in the Ablekuma West Constituency of the Greater Accra Region during the 2024 elections. A pickup truck delivering food packs, allegedly linked to incumbent Member of Parliament Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, was driven away by angry voters amidst hooting and protests.

The incident, which unfolded early in the day, saw voters accusing the team of distributing food to influence the electoral process. The occupants of the vehicle, however, denied the claims, stating that the food was intended for polling agents and Electoral Commission (EC) officials.

“We just brought breakfast for our polling agents and EC officials, but the NDC members asked us to take the vehicle out. The food is from Ursula Owusu. This shouldn’t create a problem because it’s not for voters,” said Doris Boakye, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ablekuma West, in an interview with Citi News monitored by Vincent Ryan.

Despite their explanation, the truck was moved out of the polling station and parked outside the voting center to maintain order. Police officers were deployed to the scene to de-escalate tensions and ensure a smooth voting process.

The incident adds to the already heated competition in the Ablekuma West Constituency, where Ursula Owusu-Ekuful of the NPP is contesting against Kweku Addo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
