The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has come to the defence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, rejecting the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) recent declaration that he is a fugitive.

Henry Nana Boakye, the NPP’s National Organiser, addressed journalists in Accra on Thursday, February 13, strongly disputing the OSP’s claim. He asserted that Ofori-Atta is not, and will never be, a fugitive.

“Mr. Ofori-Atta can never be a fugitive. He is not a fugitive, and he will never be a fugitive. The OSP got it wrong. Once Ofori-Atta’s doctors declare him fit and healthy, he will return to the country,” Boakye emphasized.

Boakye criticized the OSP for making what he described as sensational statements that stir public emotions and create unnecessary drama. He stressed that the matter could have been resolved more effectively through proper communication channels.

“The Special Prosecutor should refrain from making sensational statements that provoke public emotions and create drama over a matter that could have been resolved through correspondence,” he added.

The NPP National Organiser expressed concern that branding Ofori-Atta as a fugitive was a national embarrassment, particularly given the brief two-week communication between the OSP and Ofori-Atta’s legal team.

“If you label your former finance minister a fugitive—when he is clearly not—it’s a national embarrassment, especially when the communication has lasted only two weeks, and there’s no indication he’s gone missing or cannot be located,” Boakye remarked.
